From hydrated lime to aggregate: dolomitic rock in construction

Mortars, blocks, floors and bases: dolomitic rock enters construction as lime (calcined and hydrated) and as aggregate (crushed). Understand where each form performs best and why quality consistency prevents pathologies on site.


Construction consumes dolomitic rock in two quite distinct forms — and confusing them leads to the wrong specification. On one side, hydrated lime, a calcined and hydrated product. On the other, aggregates, the rock merely crushed and classified.

Lime in mortar

In mortar, hydrated lime does a job that cement alone does not do well: it gives plasticity, water retention and the ability to accommodate small movements without cracking. A cement-only mortar is strong but rigid and hardly workable; lime gives workability and durability back to the render. The quality of the lime — its fineness and available oxide content — defines yield and finish. Poorly calcined or poorly hydrated lime produces unreacted grains that can cause expansion pathologies in the plaster.

Aggregates

Crushed stone, stone dust, riprap and manufactured sand come from the same rock, crushed into different size ranges. They serve concrete, bases and sub-bases, drainage and as fine aggregate. Dolomitic rock is hard and abrasion-resistant — a valuable trait in structural aggregate and in layers that bear load. Manufactured sand (crushing sand) has been gaining ground as an alternative to natural river sand, with the advantage of controlled grading and a steady supply.

Calcined or not — the practical rule

If the role is binder (mortar, soil stabilization, paint), the form is lime — calcined. If the role is structural or fill (concrete, base, drainage), the form is aggregate — uncalcined. The same rock, two products, two markets.

Why consistency matters on site

Construction is volume and deadline. An aggregate whose grading varies from load to load throws off the concrete mix; lime of unstable quality changes the mortar's behavior in the middle of the job. The value of a serious supplier is not only in the one-off product, but in repeatability — always receiving the same material, with a report, from the first to the last truck.
